Anatomical Mirror


The Anatomical Mirror is a multimedia installation that provides a playful insight into the human body. Through gestures and movement a virtual body is mirrored, which reveals more and more of the human anatomy the closer you get to it. The application represents a digital educational board and provides basic information about names, positions and proportions of all organs as well as the most important muscles and vessels.

The first prototype of the Anatomical Mirror was created in 2014, the first full version was released in 2016 and since then the software has been continuously developed.


What is the target group of the Anatomical Mirror?

The Anatomical Mirror is aimed at laymen and interested persons. In our opinion, the Anatomical Mirror is not suitable for medical teaching because the necessary level of detail is missing.

Why does the anatomy level show no skin level?

Our aim is to keep the anatomy models ethically neutral. A skin level would direct the observer's gaze more towards himself or herself. Issues such as skin colour, skin condition and age would now become more important and would change the users view of the Anatomical Mirror. For the same reasons we refrained from using thick, thin, normative representations of the human being.
The aim of the Anatomical Mirror is simply to show anatomy.

What are the technical requirements of the Anatomical Mirror?

Der Anatomiespiegel benötigt eine Microsoft Kinect v2, a projector or a large-format monitor and an average multimedia PC (4Gb Ram, 500 Gb, ab 3.2 GHz Dual Core processor, Windows 10, USB 3.0, graphics card Nvidia GeForce GTX 900 and above).

Why Kinect v2?

The use of the Microsoft Kinect v2 enables an easy and fast detection of people and their body movements. No special preparation, clothing or instruction is required. The interaction with the Anatomical Mirror can therefore occur intuitively and naturally and is thus possible for every human being.

How well is tracking of the Kinect?

Experience has shown that Microsoft Kinect v2 works very well in diffuse to bright lighting conditions. But the more homogenous the lighting, the better the tracking. The body movements are tracked directly. Problems occur with reflective floors, clothing (skirts, jackets) and a few fabrics that absorb infrared light. In these cases, the 3D model may shake and wobble. Most users are more likely to be amused by this.
However hand rotation and fingers are not tracked by the Kinect.

How large is the interaction area?

The interaction maximum is 4.5 meters and the minimum 0.5 meters away from the sensor. But tracking between 4 meters and 1 meter works best.
